Aptiva 4xx and S Processor Upgrade Information

Certain 4xx and S series Aptivas contain nearly identical components, but certain parts are also substantially different so please verify your system compatibility before attempting to upgrade the processor. However, changing the processor is generally matter of simply removing the old one, installing the new one, and changing some jumpers to let the system know what kind of processor you have installed.

The following is a table of processors and corresponding jumper settings. Thanks to dvmak@ibm.net for providing this information.

Note: As you can see the Jumper for 1-3, 4-6 is unused. I get no results using this setting. If anyone knows whether this supports 75MHz please let me know.

Special Notes on Aptiva 4xx and S Systems

1. there are a few S-xx series that have recently been released with the pentium MMX chip. Since the 2159-Sxx and 2176-4xx use the same motherboards it goes without saying that a pentium MMX processor will work in all these models. (If you do decide to upgrade to P55 Intel processor (MMX) then you need to change out the shorting block for a voltage regulator block (MMX) IBM part number 76H3658.) In fact these systems have been configured with pentium processors ranging from a 120mhz to 200mhz. So before you run out and spend money on a "Upgrade processor" look into prices on the standard processor in the Mhz that you would want to upgrade to. Chances are that it would be less expensive. (Note: IBM does not support upgrading the processor. This really makes no sense since they have released these systems in all possible configurations.)
